ROOF
Classical elegance that sets standards: the fully automatic roof convincingly impresses with its excellent thermal and acoustic insulation. It gives the BMW 6 Series Convertible a coupé-like silhouette and, in combination with the drop-down rear window ensures effective ventilation of the interior.
Available in three colours, the roof folds into the hood enclosure in the boot at the touch of a button to provide even more fresh air. At speeds of up to 40 km/h it opens in only 19 seconds and closes in 24.
The optional wind deflector helps to counteract irritating wind noises at high speeds. Quickly mounted behind the front seats, the deflector noticeably reduces air turbulence inside the vehicle, thus creating a pleasant driving sensation. If the wind deflector is not needed it disappears compactly inside the luggage space.
Even with the roof closed, you and your passengers will enjoy a pleasant open-air driving experience in the BMW 6 Series Convertible. This is how travelling becomes your favourite sport: the V8 engine in the BMW 650i with petrol direct injection and TwinPower Turbo accelerates with an outstanding 300 kw (407 hp) and a maximum torque of 600 Nm. At the same time, the 8-speed sports automatic transmission keeps the engine in the optimum revving range and shifts almost imperceptibly while offering you supreme travelling comfort.
Centrally fitted exhaust turbochargers in the V of the cylinder banks permit an especially compact engine design and hence a low weight. Only the tachometer will reveal how fast and seamlessly the new eight-speed sports automatic transmission changes gear. The additional gears are finely graduated so that the change from third to fourth gear, for example, takes place with small rev intervals and the transmission process itself is barely perceptible. At the same time, the engine is always held at the performance level at which it can optimally utilise its strength. For more dynamics, more comfort – and more efficiency.
At higher speeds the engine revs drop due to the eight gear, thus decreasing fuel consumption, which is further reduced in the BMW 640i thanks to the automatic transmission with Auto Start Stop function. The engine switches of when the car stops and starts up again while your foot is leaving the brake pedal.

DYNAMIC DRIVING CONTROL
How would you like to drive today? Dynamic Driving Control fitted as standard makes the difference. Adapt the BMW 6 Series Convertible to meet your needs – or those of your passengers.
A touch of the paddle next to the gearshift lever changes the level of driving pleasure from NORMAL to SPORT: the engine responds more spontaneously to the accelerator and the eight-speed sports automatic transmission Steptronic lets the engine rev high before quickly changing up a gear. At the same time it tightens the setting of the steering. Touch the paddle again to enter the SPORT + mode where the Dynamic Stability Control allows controlled drifting to the limit.
The currently active mode is permanently displayed underneath the speedometer, and in the SPORT mode the drive train and chassis settings can be quickly and individually configured using the iDrive Controller for dynamic driving on badly surfaced roads for example. Enhancing driving pleasure and so much more besides: BMW Efficient Dynamics represents a suite of intelligent technologies that markedly reduce fuel consumption and emissions while simultaneously boosting the performance of the BMW 6 Series Convertible.
The underlying principle is very straightforward: minimise waste, maximise energy use. Brake Energy Regeneration, for example, charges the battery with the power produced by the engine when the BMW 6 Series Convertible is coasting or braking, freeing power output for acceleration. Other innovative measures include electromechanical power steering and precise aerodynamic design. The engines of the BMW 6 Series Convertible feature performance-boosting technology such as Twin Power turbochargers and petrol direct injection, and extract more power from considerably less fuel.
Fewer CO2 emissions, more driving pleasure: this is BMW Efficient Dynamics.
ELECTRIC POWER STEERING
The Electric power steering system only activates when it's needed: when you're turning the wheel. It draws electrical power from the battery, which Brake Energy Regeneration has previously captured from the vehicle's kinetic energy.
br> This element of BMW Efficient Dynamics replaces the conventional hydraulic power-steering system with an electric motor. While hydraulic systems constantly draw power from the engine - thereby consuming extra fuel - the innovative BMW system only springs into action when it's actually needed. If you don't move the steering wheel (on a straight, for example, or on a steady curve) the electric motor remains inactive, reducing power consumption.
BRAKE ENERGY REGENERATION.
Until now, braking meant giving away energy. Brake Energy Regeneration puts an end to this by winning energy back during braking to charge the battery.
As soon as drivers take their foot off the accelerator the generator is engaged and converts excess kinetic energy into electrical energy. Once the battery is fully charged, the generator is disengaged from the engine. This unburdens the engine and reduces emissions. Fuel consumption savings means that there is more power available for acceleration.
AUTO START STOP FUNCTION
Red lights, traffic jams, road works – in everyday driving situations there are countless instances where the engine is idling, unnecessarily burning fuel. This is prevented by the Auto Start Stop function.
The Auto Start Stop function switches off the engine when the BMW 6 Series Convertible is not moving. The intelligent electronics system has already calculated and checked the charge level of battery and if other systems – such as the air conditioning or rear windscreen heating – require more energy. Releasing the footbrake starts up the motor almost instantly so that the journey can continue.
This technology by BMW Efficient Dynamics is employed in the BMW 640i with 8-speed sports automatic transmission. The result is the elimination of unnecessary fuel consumption and emission.
Connectivity:
FULL COLOUR HEAD-UP DISPLAY
One second and 28 metres. This is the time required to take your eyes off the road and read 100 km/h on the speedometer. The Head-Up Display projects the current speed or navigation instructions directly into your field of vision while your eyes stay on the road.
The clear, distinct colours make it easy for you to recognise important information, such as the pedestrian warning from BMW Night Vision or the instructions from Lane Change Warning. If required, the currently applicable speed limit and route directions from the navigation system can also be displayed. Particularly helpful at complicated motorway exits or confusing junctions is the clear display showing the correct lane to take.
For the first time the information is projected onto the windscreen of the BMW 6 Series Convertible in full colour and is clearly legible in all lighting conditions. To ensure that the information is at the driver’s eye level, the height of the Head-Up Display can be adjusted. All in all, it enables you to register information much faster, without having to take your eyes off the road.
BMW NIGHT VISION
Safer night time driving. BMW Night Vision, an innovation from BMW Connected Drive, can see in the dark and warns the driver of any approaching danger that is located outside of the range of the headlights.
An infrared camera positioned in the BMW kidney grille reveals objects up to 300 metres ahead of the vehicle. Pedestrians and cyclists are identified and highlighted on the Control Display. Three processors simultaneously calculate all movements outside of the vehicle and the course of the BMW 6 Series Convertible. Should the system detect any danger of a collision, the driver receives a warning on the Control Display or on the Head-Up Display in the form of a symbol that shows the position of the person outside of the vehicle.
DRIVER ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS
Driving with instinct: the BMW 6 Series Convertible provides discreet support and active assistance to avoid dangerous situations. Radars and cameras monitor conditions and warn the driver of lane changes, vehicles coming too close.
At the rear of the vehicle the Lane Change Warning uses radar sensors to activate a warning symbol on the wing mirror if there is a vehicle currently in the driver’s blind spot or if a vehicle is approaching quickly from the rear. As soon as drivers use the indicator to change lanes, they are warned in potentially dangerous situations by a flashing LED signal and vibrations.
The camera positioned at the front of the vehicle assists the Lane Departure Warning system. At speeds above 70 km/h it monitors the edge of the road and the markings so that even before the vehicle unintentionally leaves its lane, the system issues a warning to the driver by making the steering wheel vibrate. Indicating deactivates this technology from BMW ConnectedDrive while the driver is turning off or changing lane.
PARKING ASSISTANT
The Parking Assistant takes on the search for a parking space as well as the parking; you just give the voice commands.
Ultrasonic sensors in the side vents search for parking spaces when travelling at speeds of up to 35 km/h, allowing you to concentrate on the traffic ahead. Blue arrows indicate if a parking space is available either on the left or the right side of the road. The assistant takes care of the steering so that all you have to do is select the correct gear and control the accelerator and the brake. Instructions are displayed on the free-standing Control Display together with the Park Distance Control and the image from the Rear View camera. BMW Connected Drive not only connects the BMW 6 Series Convertible with the outside world, it also simplifies daily life.
Comfort:
FUNCTIONALITY
Are aesthetics and functionality mutually exclusive? Not in the BMW 6 Series Convertible. It has a luggage compartment that offers a convincingly large amount of storage space whether the roof is open or closed and an interior in which up to four people can travel comfortably even on long journeys.
The locking central armrest and two drink holders in the central console offer ample storage space for all those indispensable travel accessories. Larger items of luggage fit effortlessly into the generous boot. With the roof closed, its 350 litres provide enough space for two golf bags or up to five crates of water. When the roof is opened, it folds away so compactly that you still have 300 litres of stowage space.
The BMW 6 Series Convertible becomes even more flexible with Original BMW Accessories. Examples include the precisely fitted, multifunctional luggage compartment mat with folding box and boot sill protector.
The rear-mounted transport platform conveniently carries two bicycles for sporting performances away from the road. A click-on system makes it easy to mount the platform on the car, with no tools required. The boot lid remains easily accessible and the roof can still be opened and closed. All of these features helped the system to win the red dot award for innovative product design in 2009
DRIVER ORIENTATION
As soon as you take the wheel for the first time, you will sense how perfectly the BMW 6 Series Convertible has been constructed for you. Every surface and every line, every switch and every display. All the essentials are designed perfectly with the driver in mind and positioned exactly where you intuitively expect them to be.
To the left of the steering wheel the switch for Driver assistance systems and the light settings. Directly in front of you the well-arranged cockpit with all the information relevant to driving and safety, which the full-colour Head-Up Display from BMW ConnectedDrive projects directly into your field of vision if required. And finally the steering wheel itself, which sits firmly in the hands.
If your gaze wanders slightly to the right it will automatically alight upon the free-standing 10.2-inch full-colour display. Not far below, your right hand will intuitively find the gear shift lever and the Dynamic Driving Control on the central console. Next to it, and also within easy reach of the front passenger is the iDrive Controller which, among other functions, controls the navigation and infotainment systems. And even that is so remarkably easy: right to continue, left for back and press to select.
Setting the climate control function in your BMW 6 Series Convertible to the desired temperature is just as easy. Everything you need for this setting is also positioned on the central console and is just as intuitive to operate. And you can then concentrate on what is really important – sheer driving pleasure.
CAMERA SYSTEMS
A clear view in unclear situations with innovations from BMW ConnectedDrive: up to five cameras give the BMW 6 Series Convertible a clear view of any situation.
Two front-end Side View cameras are integrated in the front bumper, one directed to the left and one to the right. Both images are shown simultaneously on the free-standing Control Display to give you a clear view when carrying out parking manoeuvres.
The Rear View camera also provides welcome support when parking. Interactive lane lines in the image inform the driver whether or not the parking space is large enough. The zoom function allows you to adjust the image so that you can attach a trailer to the tow bar without the need for further assistance.
The Top View cameras in the wing mirrors complete the camera package. Together with the data from the Rear View camera the system generates a bird's eye image of the BMW 6 Series Convertible and its current location. Whether you are entering or leaving a parking space, carrying out every manoeuvre is simple and safe.
